During the debate in Strasbourg yesterday, Tory MEP Roger Helmer joined forces with UKIP MEP Graham Booth. Both denied Climate Change exists and questioned the need for action against Global Warming. Labour MEPs have criticised their "scientifically unsubstantiated efforts" to discredit causes and effects of climate change.
The European Parliament report on "Scientific facts of Climate Change", which was voted through yesterday, warns that existing climate change mitigation policies and related sustainable development practices will be insufficient to reduce global greenhouse emissions over the next decades.
Linda McAvan, Labour's spokesperson on Climate Change: "Data projections for 2050 show that Europe needs to act and it needs to act now. If we delay action on Climate Change the window of opportunity to achieve the EU objective of limiting the global average temperature rise to not more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, will close on us."
Linda McAvan MEP stressed: "The evidence presented by independent scientists through the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) is overwhelming. We should accept the science and get on with the remedies. Climate Change Deniers are jeopardising the future of our planet."
