British Bully MEPs Fined

13 March 2008, 10:56am

The President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering, has condemned the bully behaviour of some UKIP and Tory MEPs and announced fines for their actions during the Parliament's plenary session in December 2007.

On the 12th December 2007, UKIP and Tory MEPs interrupted the signing of the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights with acts of pure hooliganism. They shouted down the Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates whilst he was publicly showing support for basic human rights.

The following British MEPs face a deduction of their daily allowance: Jim Allister (independent) - 3 days, Godfrey Bloom (UKIP) - 2 days, Roger Helmer (Conservative) - 3 days and Roger Knapman (UKIP) - 3 days.

Gary Titley MEP, Labour's Leader in Europe, commented: "I hope we have seen the back of those bully boy tactics. Democracy is about respecting each other."
