UKIP failed to support EU flood aid for Britain

11 March 2008, 4:00pm

Labour MEPs welcomed the decision to award 162.4m Euro of EU aid money to the UK, after MEPs in the European Parliament voted overwhelming in favour of the assistance.

However, not all British MEPs agreed on the aid for the affected regions. UKIP MEPs abstained from the vote that secured the money from the EU Solidarity Fund.

Gary Titley MEP, Labour's Leader in Europe, commented: "UKIP's failure to support aid to regions most severely affected by last summer's devastating floods shows again that these MEPs are not prepared to stand up for British interests in Europe."

Gary Titley MEP continued: "The British Labour Government successfully pushed for this payment from the EU Solidarity Fund.  This money will hopefully go some way towards covering those costs for the victims of the floods."

The money will now be transferred to the UK Treasury which will then consult with local authorities on how best to allocate the funds.
