Reacting to the recent European Commission decision to launch an investigation into the alleged dumping of Chinese candles, the Euro MP said: "A very real consequence of free trade is that European producers have to compete against countries such as China. In the face of this challenge, our industry should adapt rather than seek trade protection at all costs."
"European producers continually look to the European Commission for protection from China and other countries that have a competitive edge in the manufacturing sector. Last year European Commission was to renew import duties on low energy light bulbs. The Commission ruled in favour of European producers in that case. I believe that decision was to the detriment of consumers as it raised the cost of light bulbs by as much as 66%."
"I urge the Commission to resist calls from European producers to impose protectionist measures against China in this new investigation over candle imports. European producers can stay competitive through diversifying into the high end market. There is a consumer demand for luxury candles such as scented or personalised candles. Manufacturers should respond to this growing demand instead of fighting against inevitable cheap Chinese imports."
Speaking on the European Commission's announcement last month that it would not carry out its planned reform of the EU's Trade Defence Instruments, David Martin MEP said: "When I spoke with Commissioner Mandelson this morning, he was clear that the Commission would not reform Europe's system of Trade Defence Instruments until a consensus within the Member States could be reached. I am convinced that it is in Europe's interests to reform the TDI system as soon as possible. Cases such as this present case on Chinese candles would have no place under a reformed TDI system. Instead of complaining about threats to European industry, we should welcome the benefits for European consumers. And, as the Chinese saying goes: Don't curse the darkness - light a candle."
