Spammers to be prosecuted

25 January 2008, 9:46am

Labour MEPs have called on the European Commission to guarantee the protection of consumers against spam, spyware and malicious software.

The European Commission has responded by stating that they give the utmost importance to the protection of consumers in the digital world. The European Commission's Telecom Reform introduces the possibility for internet services to take legal action against spammers. New rules devised by the Commission will force communication services to notify consumers about any security breaches.

Labour MEP Claude Moraes said: "I welcome the Commission's proposals to allow Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to take legal action against spammers. Spam e-mails are an everyday irritant for millions of people. Hopefully this will go some way in combating the practice. I am also pleased that the Commission is giving importance to mechanisms which will increase the security of electronic communication. This is becoming more and more important in our digital age."

Labour's Chair of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee,
Arlene McCarthy
said: "This is a clear consumer protection issue, many people, advisedly or not, have their whole life histories stored on their computers. Internet Service Providers have a duty to their customers and should be taking action against the spammers. With the new telecoms reform we have given them the power to do just that!"

Ends.
