European air-route lunacy damaging the environment

15 June 2007, 1:30pm

The Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot - in a response to a question posed by Labour MEP David Martin - today stated that the European Commission may act if Member States fail to stop aircraft taking unnecessary detours to save on air traffic control fees.

In the reply Barrot recognised the problem addressed by Mr Martin's question, which  noted that "according to Eurocontrol estimates, airlines in Europe are currently running at a 7% distance inefficiency, owing to the practice whereby aircraft fly around countries which charge higher fees for the use of their air traffic control services".

Speaking today David Martin MEP, a member of the European Parliament's recently established Climate Change Committee said: "Obviously that means a 7% increase in Carbon emmissions for absolutely no gain whatsoever.  A standardised air traffic control charge to discourage this practise is essential.  Getting airlines into the Emmissions Trading Scheme is also vital but we must seek policy coherence, and attack this crisis from all angles."

Barrot stated that: "If Member States do not achieve sufficient results, the Commission would be ready to amend legislation."

In response Martin said: "Climate change is happening now.  We can't afford to wait to make this type of change, which will result in a sizeable reduction in carbon emmissions at no recognisable cost."
