John is a Labour MEP for South East England. He is a full member of the European Parliament’s Budget Committee, a substitute member of the Regional Development Committee and a member of the Delegation to the Caribbean.
Before being returned to the Parliament, John spent 28 years as a business owner, director and consultant. Born into a mining family on Tyneside, John attended the local comprehensive school and became the first of the family to go to University.
He graduated from the University of Essex in Economics and went on to gain a Master’s in Art History and Theory. John has served as a senior councillor, first on Berkshire County Council, and then on Reading's Unitary Council, where he was responsible for Transport and Environment issues.
John is married to Jane Coney, and has two grown up children, Jamie and Jess, and a step daughter, Alex. When not working John’s main interests are playing guitar, following Newcastle United, cooking for friends and family and the occasional round of golf.
