Labour MEPs have welcomed the new leader of the European Parlaiment Socialists and Democrats Group, Iratxe García Pérez, who succeeded Udo Bullmann today.

Richard Corbett MEP, Labour's Leader in the European Parliament, said:

“We congratulate Iratxe García Pérez on becoming President of the Socialists and Democrats and look forward to working with her. This is a crucial time in Europe for social democracy, with our values threatened, on everything from Brexit to the march of extremism across the continent - and in Iratxe, we have someone who will fight for our beliefs and never give up.

“We must continue the good work we have done over the past few years, on everything from protecting and enhancing workers’ rights, to tackling tax avoidance, to protecting the environment, and I am confident we will manage to do this, and Labour MEPs will continue to play our part as we have always done.

“We also pay tribute to Udo Bullmann, a great friend and colleague, who has always been there for us and never wavered in his determination to stand up for us and help us in the fight against Brexit. We wish Udo all the best and will continue to support him in whatever future roles he has.”
