Labour MEPs have urged the UK government to recognise the EU's sustainable transport goals, and abide by commitments to European environmental targets in its final decision on airport expansion, following today's publication of the Davies Commission.

Lucy Anderson MEP, Labour's European spokesperson on transport, said:

"This long-awaited report makes clear recommendations on how the UK can improve its connectivity, which is vital for jobs and economic growth.

"If we are to strengthen our transport links in Europe and globally, any airport development must be backed up by long-term investment to ensure the infrastructure required to support the development is in place.

"The UK has committed to European environmental targets so it is essential any decision on airport expansion includes firm commitments to tackle climate change, reduce noise pollution and improve air quality.

"The final decision must also recognise the EU's sustainable transport goals, particularly the need to improve rail links for passengers and freight as part of the EU's 'Shift2Rail' programme."
