MEPs spend a large amount of their time in the European Parliament working on specialised committees to scrutinise and amend proposals for new EU laws.
There are 20 parliamentary committees, which meet once or twice a month in Brussels to draw up, amend and adopt legislative proposals. They consider European Commission and European Council proposals and, where necessary, draw up reports to be presented to the plenary assembly, which usually meets in Strasbourg.
