Labour MEPS support Love Fashion Hate Sweatshops campaign - 2009-11-26
Glenis Willmott MEP, Leader of Labour's MEPs said "I'm very pleased to support War on Want's "Love Fashion Hate Sweatshops" campaign.
We are internationalists because it makes sense to work across national borders on issues like this. This is why I became an MEP after a lifetime as a trade unionist.
In the long run, internationally agreed standards are the only way to combat sweatshops.
The EU, working as one, is in a far better position than any single nation to play a leading role in linking its trade agreements to the actions taken by countries world wide in implementing the Core Labour Standards of the ILO". Child labour, the non recognition of trade unions rights and collective bargaining, and the fight against discrimination in the workplace are rights worth fighting for, rights that will bring hope and change for millions of poor people forced to live in abject poverty.
As we approach Christmas, we should all think twice before we shop, and think twice about how the products we buy were made and about the workers who make them."
